I was feeling sad about the damage humans have done to our planet and decided to do something good in a corner of my garden.
And in the process I remembered that human beings are part of this wonderful natural world and have a unique place in caring for it… We can pull out invasive species; plant flowers and trees; we can feed hungry birds in winter and give them water in summer; we can bring life back to the oceans, capture carbon, and create electricity from wind and sun; we can grow plants that help each other grow, that in turn support insects, birds and animals; and we can dig ponds that support entire ecosystems!
At Growing Me we know that children who grew up in environments that were not caring, often struggle to feel that they are worth caring for. They can carry a deep seated belief that they are ‘bad’. Finding out that humans are a force for good in our natural world can be an important discovery for children, just as it was for me as I watched my pond today.
There is good in all of us, in our own small way, we sometimes just need help to see it.
